The Craiceann Summerschool 2019 will take place from Monday 24th of June through Friday 28th of June 2019

Sign up will be available before the end of the year. Here is what has happened in 2018:

We are always looking to include new  top-class individuals in our tutor line-up. Of particular interest to us are people who have come to Craiceann originally as a student but then through academic qualification and/or performance accomplishment have reached the highest level. Notable past examples are Eamon Murray and Aimee Farrell-Courtney, and for 2018 we are introducing Andy Kruspe into this special category.

So our tutorial team for 2018 includes Siobhán O’Donnell, Aimee Farrell-Courtney, Cormac Byrne, Jim Higgins, Colm Phelan, Robbie Walsh, Andy Kruspe and Rolf Wagels. To read more about the teachers, follow this link.

After a great success in previous years, we continue the new teaching module called “The Craiceann Masterclass”. This is in addition to our normal range of seven classes from Beginner to Advanced. It is being introduced in response to suggestions from our tutors that there is now a need for a professional level teaching experience targeted at that small number of people who are currently playing and performing at the very highest level. Participation in the Masterclass is by invitation only. All details can be found at “The Classes” page.

Donal Lunny

Once again this year the great Donál Lunny will join us at Craiceann. He will be demonstrating and teaching his special technique for bass bodhrán playing during some of the evening classes.
Donal Lunny needs no introduction: He is an icon in the Irish Traditional Music world over the last thirty years. As a performer, producer, and mentor, he has had a huge influence on the music itself and on those who play and just listen to this powerful part of our Irish culture and heritage. He has been a member of many landmark bands such as Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, and more recently Mozaik. Under his guidance, all of these bands have led significant shifts in style and content, but through all this progress Dónal has remained anchored to the bedrock of our music’s tradition.

We will have two great concerts: Goitse featuring Colm Phelan will return to Inis Oirr after the great success of their gig a few year’s back. The other concert sports one of the up and coming bands in Ireland, Fuinneamh (meaning ‘energy’ in Irish). Their bodhrán player, James O’Connor is the current All Ireland bodhrán champion and a long time Craiceann student.

The three workshops/lectures which take place during the day between classes will be given by Mícheál O’hÁlmháin himself, Andy Kruspe, who is also a drumming instructor and world class dancer Tomás Ó Sé.

Bodhrán maker Christian Hedwitschak will bring a selection of drums and he will also be available during the week.
